You will address one of the following:

1. In 2010, Wisconsin governor Scott Walker enacted an initiative to disband many of the state's public sector unions. Among the affected unions were teaching and research assistants at the University of Wisconsin (a state-supported university), who worked on semester-long appointments helping professors with all manner of projects and classes. TAs and RAs received a small monthly stipend, tuition remission, and health benefits for their work. The TA and RA union protested Walker's measure fiercely. What do you think were some of the reasons for these protests? On the other hand, from an economic perspective, why would Governor Walker seek to disband public sector unions?

2. Poverty is officially defined as a function of a family's weekly food expenditures. Poverty, though, is not simply an economic issue, but a social one as well. Please give a definition of poverty that captures both its economic (objective) and social (subjective) elements. Explain the reasoning behind your definition.
